What do you mean by “natural hair”?
Natural hair is hair that is free from chemicals - no relaxers, no texturizers.
My hair is natural. What are some styling options?
Options include two strand twists, single comb twists, two strand twists flat to the scalp, cornrows, straw sets, twist outs, and locks. Often two techniques can be combined to create a different style. An example is to have cornrows in the front and a two strand twist in the back. If you desire locks, I offer both initial lock services and lock maintenance services. Hair coloring services are offered for both natural and locked hair.
I have been natural for awhile now. It seems dry. Can you help me find the right products to keep my hair healthy?
Yes, I offer several product lines in my salon that are perfect for natural hair. I offer products from Nairobi, only available in salons, Joie Naturals - www.joienaturals.com and Jane Carter Solutions – www.janecartersolutions.com. If you find something you like on the web site, you can come by the salon and purchase it. No waiting for a mail order!
Yes I am licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR), formerly the Texas Cosmetology Commission.
Do you start or maintain locks?
Yes. Locking is a process that can take from 2 months to two years depending on the curl pattern of the hair. I start locks by using either a single comb twist or the two strand twist. I also perform the “interlock” method of locking for wavy or curly hair that needs some assistance with locking. Lock maintenance includes shampoo, condition, and twisting of the new growth.
I am certified in providing lock extensions. This method allows you to skip the initial phases of locking by creating lengthy locks instantly using human kinky hair. As your natural hair grows out, it is twisted into the locks. Eventually the extension hair is removed and your natural locks will remain.
Are you certified in Sisterlocs?
No.
I am bored with my locks. What styling options do you offer?
Lock maintenance begins with a cleansing shampoo and deep conditioning treatment. New growth is twisted using all natural hair products. There are several ways to add curls, crinkles, and wavy looks to locks. They can also be styled into updos, buns, french rolls, and ponytails. Creativity is the key! I have a wonderful selection of hair jewelry available in the salon. The jewelry is distributed through New Bein Enterprises from New York – www.newbein.com. Drop by and add some sparkle and spice to your locks!
What types of braids can you do?
Both cornrows and individual braids can be done for natural hair. I do not perform services that include the addition of extension hair. If a client is preparing to visit a braiding salon for braid services, I offer shampoo and deep conditioning services of natural or relaxed hair. Many braiding salons require you arrive with your hair already shampooed. Protein conditioning is also offered.
Do I need to shampoo my hair prior to my appointment?
No. My services include a refreshing, cleansing shampoo and deep conditioning treatment as an integral part of your service. Protein conditioning is offered as an optional service.
Although I can flat iron natural hair, I prefer to refer clients to another hairstylist within my salon for press and curl services.
Yes, they must be at least 6 years old. I have movies available to keep them entertained.
How much do you charge for consultations?
Consultation is free!
I customize my work hours to accommodate working clients. I am available for appointments beginning at 9:30 am but also offer evening, weekend (some Sundays), and Monday appointments.
I am transitioning my hair from relaxed to natural. I can’t do anything with it. Can you help?
There are several styles and combinations of techniques that can be attractive and easily managed while you transition into healthy natural hair. The two strand twist flat to the scalp, straw sets, and rod sets are examples of styles which do not require extension hair. If you decide to have your hair braided using extension hair during this transition period, I recommend using my shampoo and deep conditioning services.
